Nancy Shugart, owner and president of Amazing Video Magnifiers, understands first-hand about low vision. Nancy lost her sight at age eight due to Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa.

A small magnifying glass was all Nancy had to help her see to read from the time she was in third grade up until her junior year in college. It was painfully slow and exhausting, not to mention very frustrating.

Growing up in a small town just outside of Houston, Texas, Nancy had no way of knowing that just five years after she lost her sight, an answer was born.

Child With Visual Impairment Inspires New Innovation

In 1970, four members of the prestigious American Stanford University electrical engineering department led by Professor John Linvill developed the technology that was to become the Optacon, a portable electronic print-reading device, in an effort to assist Professor Linvill's daughter who was visually impaired.

But she wasn't the only one whose life would be changed by this new invention! It would, however, be another seven years before Nancy would learn of this invention.

At a point when Nancy was just about to give up, when she was falling farther and farther behind in her reading assignments in college, and when she was believing the only solution was to quit, Nancy was introduced to this innovative technology!

Gift of Sight from a Lions Club

In 1977, twelve years after Nancy had lost her sight, a Lions Club in the Dallas area donated a video magnifier to the university's library. Nancy's counselor at the Commission for the Blind, Martha Garber, strongly encouraged Nancy to go look at it.

Visual Aid Dilemma

Nancy said, "As I walked over to the library, I wasn't convinced this machine could help me. Doctors had tried every kind of visual aid and nothing was strong enough to help me to see to read."

But this time would be different.

I Can See To Read!

The librarian turned the video magnifier on and within seconds, the print from Nancy's history book appeared up on the screen in large bold black letters.

Nancy said, "For the first time since I was eight years old, I could see to read again."

Video Magnifier Helps Dream Come True

Nancy went on to live her dream as a teacher in the public schools in Austin, Texas for 21 years. With a video magnifier on her desk in her classroom and one on her desk at home, Nancy was able to complete all the paperwork required of her as a teacher.

Today, as a successful businesswoman, Nancy continues to have a Telesensory video magnifier on her desk in her office.
